Green Prize in Public Education Panelists

Will Allen

Allen is an urban farmer who is transforming the cultivation, production, and delivery of healthy foods to underserved, urban populations. In 1995, while assisting neighborhood children with a gardening project, Allen began developing the farming methods and educational programs that are now the hallmark of the non-profit organization Growing Power, which he co-founded and where he serves as Chief Executive Officer.

Robert Corbin

Corbin is a National Board Certified Science Teacher, currently serving as Vice President of Learning Experiences for Discovery Place Inc. Corbin has taught for 20 years in a variety of public middle schools and high schools for Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools. He has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards and fellowships, and is also an experienced curriculum writer, and curriculum author for AIT (An Inconvenient Truth) in Classroom. Corbin holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and an I.M.A. in Natural Science Education.

Laura Michalchyshyn

Laura Michalchyshyn serves as the President and General Manager of Planet Green, a 24-hour television channel, multi-platform station launched by the Discovery Communications in 2007. She is responsible for all aspects of the creative and business strategy including programming, operations and content development for Planet Green’s multi-platform businesses including the 24-hour television channel.

David Monsma

David Monsma is executive director of the Aspen Institute’s Energy and Environment Program, which includes the Catto Fellowship Program, the Aspen Environment Forum, the Aspen Energy Policy Forum and the Aspen Commission on Arctic Climate Change. An attorney by training, David has twenty years of policy experience in environmental law, sustainable development and corporate governance.

Tam O’Shaughnessy, Ph.D.

A former science teacher and award-wining children’s science writer, O’Shaughnessy, helped found Sally Ride Science because of her long-standing commitment to science education. As the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President for Content, Dr. O’Shaughnessy is responsible for all publications, and oversees the development of Sally Ride Science’s classroom books, teacher guides and educator institutes.

Simran Sethi

Simran Sethi is an award-winning journalist and associate professor at the University of Kansas School of Journalism and Mass Communications, where she teaches courses on sustainability and environmental communications. She is currently writing a book on contemporary environmentalism to be published by Harper Collins in Summer 2010. She is the contributing author of Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy, winner of the bronze 2008 Axiom Award for Best Business Ethics book.
