Pennies For Peace Toolkit

Through Greg Mortenson’s best-selling Three Cups of Tea and the author’s Pennies for Peace organization, thousands of educators are inspiring young people nationwide to raise money to build schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Educators hoping to join this movement can download a free K-12 service-learning toolkit designed to help them create effective penny-raising campaigns as part of their schools’ curriculum.

The Pennies for Peace Toolkit was collaboratively produced by Pennies for Peace and the Pearson Foundation with support from the NEA Foundation.  It provides a standards-aligned, service learning curriculum for all grade levels, including classroom activities, fact sheets, maps provided by National Geographic, and videos about life and culture in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Other Grant Opportunities

The NEA Foundation takes pride in the number of high-quality Learning & Leadership and Student Achievement grant proposals it receives. Since we unfortunately cannot fund all of these worthy proposals, we encourage applicants to consider multiple sources of funding when completing a grant application. Below are just a few select resources for educators searching for additional grant opportunities:

  • NEA Grants – The National Education Association offers multiple grants to public school educators throughout the nation, as well as information on other available grants.
  • Education Week – Education Week's grant index is one of the most comprehensive grants databases available to educators.
  • U.S. Department of Education - The U.S. Department of Education administers about 200 grant programs. Descriptions of these programs, as well as applications and guidelines, can be found on the Department's grants page.

  • NEA Urban Grants – The National Education Association's Urban Grants assist local NEA affiliates in the development of education reform leadership programs for preK-12/graduate school faculty and education support professionals.
  • Target Store Grants – Target Grants support programs that impact the arts and early childhood reading.
  • Target Field Trip Grants Program: The Target Field Trip Grants Program was designed to help teachers bring learning to life for students and enhance classroom studies. The grants can be used to cover the cost of transportation, entry fees, supplies and classroom resource materials so that teachers may continue using the valuable experiential learning gained from math and science, language, social studies and arts-focused field trips.
  • Toshiba America Foundation Grants - Toshiba America Foundation grants support inquiry-based projects designed by individual teachers and small teams of teachers for use in their own classrooms to improve teaching and learning in science and mathematics.
