Drop Everything and Read Bookshelf Awards
In celebration of National Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) Day, the National Education Association (NEA) offers the D.E.A.R. Bookshelf Awards. These awards are made possible with generous support from HarperCollinsChildren’sBooks as part of the NEA’s commitment to promote children’s literacy and motivate readers of all ages. This program awards $250 to public schools or public libraries for the purchase of books and reading materials that will entice children and teens to drop everything and read!
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all criteria below. Approved awards will be payable to the applicant’s school or public library. Only one eligible applicant per school or public library may submit an application.
The applicant must be a practicing preK–12 teacher or education support professional in a U.S. public school or a practicing librarian in a U.S. public library.
The applicant must agree to serve as the contact person for the award and all related public relations activities.
Deadline
The foundation is not currently accepting applications for this program.
Amount and Number
The NEA and NEA Foundation will make 20 awards of $250 each.
Restrictions
Funds may be used only to purchase books and other reading materials for use in public schools or public libraries. Funds may not be used to purchase books for personal ownership; lobbying; religious purposes; or to pay stipends, salaries, or administrative fees. Employees, members of the board of directors and immediate family members of the staff and board of The NEA Foundation or the National Education Association are not eligible to apply for this award. Funds are not transferable and will be paid only to the school or public library identified on the application form.
Notification
Only award recipients will be notified in writing. A list of award recipients will be posted on The NEA Foundation’s website (www.neafoundation.org) by April 12, 2006.
Selection Criteria
Selection will be based on random drawing, however, geographic and demographic factors will be considered.
