AL AR CO IN MA MD NE NY OK TN

ALABAMA

Ramona Hall, Albertville
1st to 2nd Grade Art Teacher
Albertville Elementary School
NEA Affiliate: Albertville City Education Association


Ms. Hall has created “Tunnel Visions: Art Through the Ages,” a project that exposes students to the role of visual arts in recording history. Students research art from different time periods: prehistoric, ancient Egyptian, Byzantine, Medieval, Renaissance, Early American, and Modern Art. Based on what they learn, students create a representative piece from each time period for display in a museum in the school lobby.

ARKANSAS

Laura Waters, Rogers
1st to 5th Grade Art Teacher
Russell D. Jones Elementary School
NEA Affiliate: Education Association of Rogers

To enhance students’ problem solving skills, Ms. Waters has developed a beginning woodworking curriculum. Students are introduced to woodworking tools, safety tips, and skills one at a time moving from simple to more complex. Using these skills, students progress from building square sanding blocks to creating three-dimensional dinosaurs with moving parts.

COLORADO

Angela Castañeda, Greeley
1st to 5th Grade Art Teacher
Dos Rios Elementary School
NEA Affiliate: Greeley Education Association

Through “Weaving and Sculpting a Brighter Tomorrow,” Ms. Castañeda uses hands-on cultural art activities to increase students’ excitement about school and learning across the curriculum. With a large classroom loom and individual Indian flat looms, students explore Mayan and Navajo weaving and create rugs that use symbol and color theory to express emotion and tell a story. Students also learn about southwestern pottery and hand-build pots from clay coils.

INDIANA

Wendy Bloom, Fort Wayne
Kindergarten to 5th Grade Music Teacher
J. Wilbur Haley Elementary School
NEA Affiliate: Fort Wayne Education Association

Ms. Bloom has created “Capture the Heart Beat of… Africa,” a fifth grade drum circle enhanced through creative research projects. Students utilize web resources, world musical instruments, music composition technologies, and multimedia tools to capture, create, and communicate presentations focused on African percussion.

MASSACHUSETTS

Cynthia Wiffin, Worcester
Kindergarten to 6th Grade Art Teacher
Wawecus Road School
NEA Affiliate: Education Association of Worcester

To incorporate language and mathematics instruction with art experiences, Ms. Wiffin presents a series of lessons focused on elements of design, a variety of media, and an underlying mathematical principal. Lessons include calculating the area of the Taj Mahal and using symmetry to create ceramic tile pieces for a mosaic.

MARYLAND

Cindy Norell, Silver Spring
Kindergarten to 5th Grade Music Teacher
Greencastle Elementary School
NEA Affiliate: Montgomery County Education Association

Working with the Metropolitan Opera Guild and Washington National Opera, Ms. Norell gives second grade students the opportunity to create an original opera. Students form a company, audition for jobs, write and edit a script, compose music, design and create costumes and sets, advertise the opera, and document the learning process.

NEBRASKA

Laura Keller, Lincoln
Kindergarten to 5th Grade Music Specialist

NEA Affiliate: Lincoln Education Association

Through “Stories of Home,” students transform personal experience into words and art. Drawing on themes of family and community, students produce sculptures, posters, banners, poetry and music to express their emotions and experience. Student work is shown beside the work of professional artists at a citywide grand opening.

NEW YORK

Jennifer Balkin, Monsey
Kindergarten to 3rd Grade Art Teacher
Margetts Elementary School
NEA Affiliate: East Ramapo Teachers Association

To strengthen social skills, boost self-confidence, and increase self-expression, Ms. Balkin offers an art-focused group for at-risk third grade girls. Students share ideas, experiment with incorporating feelings and thoughts into art work, and visit the “Female Icons” exhibit at a local art gallery. Inspired by the work of artists such as Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, and Pablo Picasso, the girls create self-portraits in various styles.

OKLAHOMA

Cara Calvert-Thomas, Ponca City
Visual Arts Teacher
Lincoln Elementary School
NEA Affiliate: Ponca City Association of Classroom Teachers

Ms. Calvert-Thomas has created a self-portrait program to enhance students’ artistic skills and self-esteem. Students study the self-portraits and autobiographical writings of famous culturally diverse visual artists who represent a variety of styles. Students then create a series of realistic and abstract self-portraits focused on different themes using clay, sculpture wire, paint, charcoal, collage, and photography.

TENNESSEE

Merry Lee Wilson, Chattanooga
Music Specialist
Spring Creek Elementary School
NEA Affiliate: Hamilton County Education Association

Ms. Wilson implements an after school drum and percussion ensemble class for at-risk students. The class examines techniques for playing different instruments, performs composed drum ensembles, and experiments with improvisational pieces. The culmination of the course is a program of music presented to the school and some civic groups.
