Dr. Tia Mills, 2018 Horace Mann Awards for Teaching Excellence Recipient

Tia Mills is an exceptional student services educator at Eden Park Academy of Ethics and Excellence in Baton Rouge, LA. She was nominated by the Louisiana Association of Educators.

Tia Mills says her number one priority is to make a difference in her students’ lives. Because her students have been expelled or suspended, she works hard to help them feel protected and engaged. Mills teaches outside of the box, tapping into her inner actress, singer, rapper and motivational speaker to reach her students where they are and to help them steer clear of the school-to-prison pipeline.

Mills works inside and outside of her classroom to make positive change for students. She serves on a grant advisory committee through the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and was elected to be on the education transition team for the new Mayor of Baton Rouge. She has presented at various national conferences, taught college-level online courses, and consults for students with disabilities. She is Vice President of the NAACP in Baton Rouge.

Mills earned her BA in History and her MA in Social Science with a concentration in History from Southern University and A&M College and her EdD in Higher Education and Organizational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
