Mr. Wilkens is participating in the American Sign Language (ASL) immersion program at Gallaudet University. After becoming fluent in ASL, Mr. Wilkens hopes to serve the learning needs of his district’s deaf students, and help hearing students gain proficiency in the language. Recognizing that his community has a serious shortage of qualified ASL instructors, Mr. Wilkens also plans to teach an ASL class at the University of Alaska-Southeast.
