Bonnie’s favorite teacher was her high school Latin teacher, Mr. Baxter, who drew connections between the ancient language and civilization today with humor and insight.
Bonnie makes her own connections at the NEA Foundation. Through Bonnie, the Foundation and local union leaders meet. Her work in the Montgomery County Education Association, including as its president from 2003 to 2009, gives her special insight into local needs and context.
As a 32-year veteran special education teacher, Bonnie understands the importance of the Foundation’s work. She believes that educators are an invaluable and often untapped resource, and she seeks to bring their knowledge and ideas into the discussion.
Even outside the classroom and the nonprofit world, Bonnie knows firsthand how important connecting with individuals can be. When she traveled to Vietnam with a friend who was adopting a child, Bonnie saw a country of family and relationships, as opposed to just being a tourist. That experience has stuck with her ever since.
