Every year, the Salute to Excellence in Education Gala brings together hundreds of individuals who care about public education to celebrate the men and women who work in America’s public schools. The 2019 Gala will be held on February 8, 2019. Registration is now open.
Teaching History to a New Generation
At the NEA Foundation, we love funding educators who dream up new ways to bring learning to life!
Educators like Darren Hornbeck, a social studies teacher at Linganore High School in Frederick, MD. With the support of an NEA Foundation grant, he created a pilot course to take his students, many of whom were not born in 2001, through the global effects of September 11th.
Every year, the Foundation awards Student Achievement and Learning and Leadership grants through our Grants to Educators program to educators like Mr. Hornbeck. These grants help educators improve their instructional practice by providing them with resources for classroom projects and professional development opportunities.
Because September 11th is still relatively recent history and so much of the material regarding it is online, Mr. Hornbeck used his Student Achievement Grant to provide his students with tablets, giving them access to digitized content and other web-based resources that they used to examine the social, cultural, and economic impact of the attacks and their aftermath.
