Foundation Leaders Tour Mississippi Schools and

Historic Sites of The Civil Rights Movement

The NEA Foundation Board of Directors embarked on The Mississippi Civil Rights, Education, Spirit and Soul Tour from March 19-21. Board members visited a rural public school in Quitman County, a community school in Jackson, and historic sites that reflect the civil rights movement and fight for equity and justice. They met with school and district officials, community leaders, and elected officials to discuss the progress, challenges, and opportunities in public education in the state.

Since 2020, the Foundation’s Community Schools Initiative has made investments in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi and convened the Southern Regional Alliance for Community Schools (SRACS) to bring together public education and community leaders to advance the community schools strategy. It most recently provided new planning grants to the Quitman County Development Organization in Mississippi, and the Rural Community Alliance of Arkansas, to strengthen emerging and established partnerships building rural community schools that over time can serve as demonstration sites for others throughout the Mid-South region and beyond. The addition of these new grantees to SRACS brings the alliance’s footprint to 10 communities and 19 schools.
