There is one common trait that is in the DNA of teachers—a stubborn and intense desire to do everything possible to help their students flourish and succeed.
I was honored to be included in Teaching with Heart: Poetry that Speaks to the Courage to Teach, a book that includes selections of favorite poems, contributed with commentary by educators and educator leaders about the teaching experience.
I selected the poem, “A Teacher’s Contract” by Mel Glenn, because it speaks to the profound bond that teachers forge with their students and which drives all of our work, “…a contract automatically renewed each year, forged in love, witnessed daily…”
During Teacher Appreciation Week, I recommend to you Teaching with Heart to pay tribute to “the relentless optimism of teachers and the belief that despite the many challenges and obstacles of the teaching life, much is possible.”
Teaching with Heart’s publication date is May 19, 2014.
