The Fairview Independent School District has been labeled as needing comprehensive improvement for the past two years and has seen behavioral issues increase dramatically in the wake of the pandemic. The district does not currently have any Social/Emotional Learning curriculum. Through this project the district will purchase and utilize the Character Strong SEL curriculum for elementary and middle school students. Weekly lessons will be provided, students will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas around each lesson, and a student survey will be given every nine weeks to measure the effectiveness and implementation of the program. To support the program, a mental health advisory committee will be developed to include the school principal, counselor, school psychologist, special education director, and lead teachers. The advisory committee will meet weekly to review student attendance, behaviors and the academic needs of students. The goal of the committee and the SEL program is to provide immediate intervention and establish positive mental health routines to at-risk students.
