Phylicia Rashād, the Tony Award-winning actress best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” will emcee the NEA Foundation Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 7.
Rashād was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role on “The Cosby Show” in 1985 and 1986 and became the first African-American actress to win a Tony Award.
She says educators have played important roles in her life, beginning with her first teacher, her mother, who taught her to read music. She credits much of her success to her high school English teacher, Mrs. Wheadon, who left such a lasting impression that years later, they worked together to encourage young people to join the teaching profession.
As this year’s Gala emcee, Rashād will help honor 36 educators as they receive public education’s most prestigious awards. For the first time, the audience will include not only the 850 education and business leaders gathered in Washington, DC but also the awardees’ students, colleagues, friends, and families who will be watching from around the country via live stream video from the NEA Foundation website.
